The RIAA/MPAA are on the offensive. They're doing everything they can to block or limit access to online media - even making an absurd case about how the RIAA and MPAA are not really a union at all, but rather the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. For the record, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest lobbying organizations in the country. Here's the latest RIAA/MPAA effort in the ongoing war against online media: Copyright Alert System.
This system would send out warnings to users when they visit sites which might or might not have infringing materials - this apparently isn't intended to be a DRM system. Regardless, the RIAA is saying that they need to be sure that if you're going to be a file-sharer you should get a license to do so.
The Copyright Alert System (CAS) has been attacked as an "infringement machine" by the public interest groups that are opposing it, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). To be fair, the copyright lobby is really just taking this argument a step further. They're saying that they shouldn't have to go to court when the bad behavior is first observed, they should be able to send out the letter first to warn of any potential infringement, so that they can evaluate what they want to do before making any official complaint.
So far, according to the RIAA, this CAS system has worked. The industry says that in 2009, only 35 percent of users received a warning. That's a drop in the bucket compared to the number of filesharers out there, but still pretty good for a first-year effort.
